What the three units mean
Why uric acid uses 59.48
NIST lists a uric acid molecular weight of 168.1103. Combining that molecular weight with the mass and volume prefixes gives about 59.48 µmol/L for each 1 mg/dL, the clinical conversion factor independently used in peer-reviewed uric acid research. [1][2][3]
The factor is specific to uric acid. It must not be reused for glucose, creatinine, cholesterol or another biomarker because each substance has a different molecular weight. [1][2]
Choose µmol/L or mmol/L exactly as printed
µmol/L is one thousand times the numeric value in mmol/L. For example, 380 µmol/L is 0.380 mmol/L. Check the prefix on the report before converting; confusing µmol with mmol creates a thousand-fold error. [2]
How the result is rounded
What the conversion cannot tell you
The converted number does not classify the result and cannot diagnose gout, kidney stones or kidney disease. Reference intervals and treatment targets are separate questions that depend on the laboratory, reason for testing and individual clinical context.
A concentration conversion is also not a 24-hour urine conversion. Urine volume, collection duration and reporting basis introduce different inputs and units, so mg/day and mmol/day are deliberately excluded.
Safe next steps
Keep the original value, unit, laboratory reference interval and test date beside the converted number. Use the conversion only to compare like with like. For interpretation or a care decision, use the complete original report and qualified professional advice.
