What this result means

How to convert hemoglobin units

To convert g/dL to g/L, multiply by 10. To convert g/L to g/dL, divide by 10. The relationship comes from the exact SI prefix definition: one decilitre is one-tenth of a litre. [1][2]

For example, 15 g/dL is 150 g/L, while 150 g/L is 15 g/dL.

The concentration does not change

A unit conversion changes only how the same mass concentration is written. It does not change the blood sample, laboratory measurement or clinical meaning. [1][2]

Keep the original result and unit. A rounded converted value should not be treated as more precise than the laboratory's reported number.

Keep the report's own reference interval

This converter deliberately does not provide a normal range. If you compare a result with a reference interval, convert both into the same unit and use the interval from the same report and laboratory context.

Hemoglobin concentration in g/dL or g/L is different from HbA1c, which is commonly reported as a percentage or mmol/mol. Do not enter an HbA1c result here.

Rounding
Use exact decimal arithmetic with 10 stored as 10/1 and its reciprocal as 1/10, then round the displayed result once to two decimal places. Exact halfway ties round upward in magnitude; a positive value below display resolution uses a less-than result.
Worked example
Example: a report shows hemoglobin of 12.34 g/dL. Multiply by 10: 12.34 Γ— 10 = 123.4, so the converted result is 123.40 g/L. [1][2]
