What the result means
Sleep research distinguishes time in bed, measured between getting into bed and getting out of bed, from a sleep period based on sleep onset and sleep offset. [1][2]
This calculator uses the two clock times you enter to calculate time in bed; it does not detect sleep onset or sleep offset.
If you choose the optional mode, estimated asleep time is only time in bed minus the awake minutes you supplied. The calculator does not silently assume 15 minutes, an average latency or any other population value.
What may affect the estimate
Sleep-duration questions can refer to different events, including getting into bed, trying to sleep, falling asleep, waking, or getting up. [1][2]
Use this calculator's labels literally—time you went to bed and time you got up—and treat the optional awake value as an estimate.
This clock-only version cannot resolve a daylight-saving transition or travel between time zones. It also leaves out naps, split sleep and multiple episodes, so those cases need a dated or elapsed-time record instead.
Safe, practical next steps
Recalculate if you entered the wrong side of midnight. If you know roughly how long you were awake after going to bed or during the interval, choose the optional mode and enter that total yourself; otherwise keep the result labelled time in bed.

Why this tool does not predict sleep cycles
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute reports that sleep cycles restart about every 80 to 100 minutes and describes sleep stages using physiological measurements including brain activity and eye movements. [3]
This calculator therefore does not predict cycles, sleep stages, an ideal bedtime or an alarm time from two clock entries.

- Rounding
- Convert each HH:MM clock entry to exact integer minutes, add one 24-hour cycle only when wake time is earlier than bedtime, and display exact hours and minutes without decimal rounding. Equal times are rejected as ambiguous.
- Worked example
- Example: bedtime 22:30 and get-up time 06:15 produce 7:45 time in bed. If you explicitly enter 15 awake minutes, the optional estimated asleep time is 7:30. No other latency or sleep-stage assumption is added.

Not intended for
Not a measurement of sleep, sleep quality, sleep need, sleep efficiency, sleep stages or circadian timing; not a bedtime recommendation, alarm planner, fixed-cycle predictor, sleep-debt tool, diagnosis, treatment aid or safety assessment.

- Equal bedtime and wake time, because zero versus 24 hours is ambiguous
- Naps, split sleep, multiple sleep episodes or intervals longer than one local clock cycle
- Nights that cross a daylight-saving clock change
- Travel across time zones or entries taken from different local time zones
- Age-based sleep need or paediatric sleep guidance
- Fixed 90-minute cycles, REM or deep-sleep predictions and optimal wake-time claims
- Sleep-debt, sleep-quality, efficiency, readiness, fatigue or risk scoring
- Insomnia, sleep apnea, hypersomnia, narcolepsy, medication or mental-health interpretation
