A once-daily GLP-1 pill has moved beyond an early study

A once-daily GLP-1 pill now has a longer evidence trail

Bottom line

VCT220 has encouraging peer-reviewed phase II evidence and sponsor-reported phase III results. The programme is advancing, but the longer result is not yet a full peer-reviewed paper or regulatory decision.

The trials differ, so the percentages are not directly comparable. Phase III figures come from the sponsor.

What happened

The new phase II paper reports that 250 adults in China were randomly assigned to once-daily VCT220 or placebo. After 16 weeks, mean weight loss ranged from 5.75% to 9.73% with VCT220 versus 1.61% with placebo. In May, the sponsor reported 12.2% to 12.4% at 52 weeks in a separate 840-person phase III trial versus 1.3% with placebo.

Why it matters

As a once-daily small-molecule pill, VCT220 could eventually expand choices beyond injections if full review and regulation confirm the result. A larger, longer trial is encouraging. Yet the longest data still come from the company, and gastrointestinal side effects affected 58.5% to 80.6% of active groups in phase II versus 27.9% with placebo.

What this does not prove: Neither source establishes safety beyond one year, weight maintenance after treatment, cardiovascular benefit, superiority to approved medicines, regulatory approval or similar results in broader populations.

Forty tissues carried different fingerprints of age

What happened

Models trained on 25,712 pathology slides from 40 tissues and 983 postmortem donors predicted age within 4.88 years on average.

Why it matters

The body may not age as one synchronised number. Different organs carry patterns that could help scientists study ageing and disease. Funding included venture and public support; four authors disclosed related patents.

What this does not prove: This is not a test that can tell a living person how old an organ is, predict future illness or show that changing a score improves health.

A shelf-stable plasma kit has reached its first U.S. licence

What happened

The FDA licensed EZPLAZ for adults who need plasma when other plasma products are unavailable. A single-donor unit can be stored at 2–25°C for 12 months, mixed to about 270 mL and infused within four hours.

Why it matters

A room-temperature option could make emergency plasma easier to carry into remote, disaster or austere settings.

What this does not prove: Licence does not show improved survival or superiority to conventional plasma. The FDA required a phase IV safety trial to clarify a potential serious risk of blood clots.

Could movement influence ovarian ageing biology?

Early: human observations plus mouse experiments

Researchers compared activity patterns in 152,435 UK Biobank participants and 12,418 U.S. NHANES participants, then tested mechanisms in mice. In mice, physical activity appeared to delay ovarian ageing partly through adiponectin signalling, and an adiponectin-receptor agonist extended reproductive lifespan.

Why it’s interesting: The work connects an everyday behaviour with a specific biological pathway, but the human data were cross-sectional.

What must happen next: Prospective human studies must test ovarian function, fertility or menopause outcomes before this could change health decisions.

Commercial interest: Public and institutional funding; the authors declared no competing interests.
