Folate and folic acid: pregnancy, dose, MTHFR and safety
Folic acid has strong evidence for preventing neural-tube defects when 400β800 micrograms is taken daily before conception and in early pregnancy.
Folate also treats confirmed deficiency under clinical care. For most other people with adequate intake, extra folate has no proven general longevity, heart or energy benefit; cognitive findings are small and context-dependent, and methylfolate has not shown better pregnancy outcomes.1,2,3,4,5,6,9,19,23

What supplement influencers are saying
These claims are included because people encounter them. Follower count, a podcast opinion and a personal routine are not scientific proof.
What is claimed
Evidence check
Contradicted. CDC states that people with common variants process folic acid and that 400 micrograms raises blood folate regardless of genotype. Rare specialist disorders are different.
What is claimed
Evidence check
Mixed and largely unsupported. A small SSRI-resistant major-depression trial supports only a possible adjunctive psychiatric use. No outcome evidence establishes broad detox, focus, energy or MTHFR benefits, and 15 mg is a medical-level dose.
What is claimed
Evidence check
Contradicted. The claim is not supported by causal human evidence; customary pregnancy doses have a substantial proven preventive benefit. Upper limits and clinician-led high doses still matter.
What is claimed
Evidence check
Exaggerated if interpreted as prevention of heart attack or death. Folate lowers homocysteine, but randomized trials show no reliable myocardial-infarction or all-cause-mortality benefit; stroke findings are modest and context-dependent.
