Folate and folic acid: pregnancy, dose, MTHFR and safety

Folic acid has strong evidence for preventing neural-tube defects when 400–800 micrograms is taken daily before conception and in early pregnancy.

Folate also treats confirmed deficiency under clinical care. For most other people with adequate intake, extra folate has no proven general longevity, heart or energy benefit; cognitive findings are small and context-dependent, and methylfolate has not shown better pregnancy outcomes.1,2,3,4,5,6,9,19,23
